Gary Wilson Hopes Ireland Will Peak at the Right Time as World Cup Begins in Earnest

With the first match in World Cup 2015 looming large Ireland's Gary Wilson is looking forward to Ireland peaking at the right time.

Having been less than ordinary against Scotland, Ireland were much improved against Bangladesh. Wilson hopes Ireland stay on an upward curve against the, at present, unpredictable West Indies.

Barry Chambers: Gary the preparations are nearly over, and a huge game against the West Indies?

Gary Wilson: Yes, I think we've prepared as as we possibly could. Obviously the result against Scotland didn't go our way, and we didn't play anyway near how we could have, or how we would have wanted to that day.

But we bounced back pretty well against Bangladesh. And look, the way we're going, we're hopefully peaking at the right time. I wouldn't say we played particularly well against Bangladesh, but we still managed to get a pretty convincing win. So hopefully we'll continue that upward curve.

Barry Chambers: The first 10 overs for the bowlers was pretty good, wasn't it?

Gary Wilson: It was yes, and that's something that's come into question over the last sort of two months or so, is the inexperience in our bowling attack. But I though the way John and Max in particular bowled after the first couple of overs, was excellent.

Barry Chambers: The batting, Andy Balbirnie starring.

Gary Wilson: Yeah like he has done all winter. You would think he was the one with the hundred caps, you know, he's just a baby in terms of games played, and he's showing us older guys how to do it at the moment.

With the exception of Ed, no one else has really kicked on. Obviously Niall played quite well in a game in Dubai. And the rest of us are due. So hopefully we'll get them at the right time as well.

Barry Chambers: It's hard to believe it's four years ago when we played the west Indies in Mohali and mixed memories from that match?

Gary Wilson: Yes, obviously for me it was pleasing to score some runs, and then obviously it was a bit of a strange way that it ended. But we were in that game for long periods of it. Like we should have won the game really. We did really well to restrict them, and then the case was going okay, until that incident, and it was a bit unfortunate, but it's done now.

Barry Chambers: Their preparation hasn't been ideal. They just about got over the line against Scotland, and a heavy defeat against England. So that gives us a little bit of confidence I think?

Gary Wilson: Yes I think, well you could look at it two ways. It might be a wakeup call for them as well, the Scotland game. I think we've just got to concentrate on what we're doing. There's a lot of chat about how West Indies Cricket is in a bit of turmoil, and things at the minute.

But one thing that's for sure is any time a player pulls on a jersey and plays for his country, he's going to be wanting to dry and do the best he can. And whatever eleven West Indies put on the pitch, there's going to be a pretty talented eleven. Having said that, we're going to be a talented eleven as well. And we know if we do play well, then we're going to have a really good chance.

Barry Chambers: And what's your first impressions of Nelson and the ground?

Gary Wilson: Yeah beautiful. Beautiful setting. Lovely scenery and stuff in the background. Nelson seems like a pretty quaint little town. I think there's only 60,000 or something. So yeah I think it's going to be a sell out on Monday, 6,500 or something. So hopefully they'll all be getting behind the Green.
