Niall O'Brien Delighted With Irish Win But Looking Forward to Rest of the Competition

A clean hitting display from Ireland's Niall O'Brien was just part of a very complete performance by an Irish side who chased down over 300 for the third time in their short World Cup History.

The feat has only been accomplished five times in all. O'Brien says Ireland will celebrate their victory tonight, but serious thoughts now turn to the remaining fixture starting with a huge game against a familiar foe in the shape of fellow Associates UAE.

Barry Chambers: Niall another famous win for Irish Cricket. But this one a lot more comfortable chasing 300 than many would have expected?

Niall O'Brien: Yeah, I think it was obviously we had a great start, had the West Indies 4, 5 down for not very many. And you know fair play to Darren Sammy and Lendl Simmons, a fantastic innings, a great partnership.

But I still think 300, you know, we knew at half time, it was about par. Yes we would have liked to chase a few less, but I think the boys did a great job at the start, and gave the likes of myself and Ed the kind of courage to go in and play with freedom, and thankfully it paid off.

Barry Chambers: I don't think I've seen the pair of you strike the ball so cleanly so often. I mean usually you are more nurdlers, or is that a bit unfair?

Niall O'Brien: Ha ha, ah no it's probably fair. We were a little bit timid in a couple of the warm up games against Scotland and Bangladesh, a little bit careful maybe in our approach. And it's something that we spoke about at the meeting, going out and playing with no fear, going for your shots.

And more than often when you go for your shots, 100% committed to it, you come off more than not. And the pitches over here are so good, we're going to need big scores. So it's important we carry on the momentum.

Barry Chambers: I heard Coach Phil Simmons there saying that this is just one win. We've got five more big games?

Niall O'Brien: Very much so yeah. Like the next game obviously, the UAE, is huge. A team we know a lot about. We don't know much about the Gabba pitch, we haven't played there before. But we'll be right up for it. We'll enjoy the victory, and we'll be right on the money come the next game.
