THE Irish team are still dreaming of greater things after their win against West Indies on Monday.

Niall O'Brien told the Irish Daily Star yesterday that he still has dreams about scoring a century at the top level and seeing his name painted in gold on honours boards.

The Railway Union man scored a brilliant unbeaten 79 as Ireland kicked off their World Cup with a famous victory.

“I reckon that is one of my best innings for Ireland”, he said from Brisbane where the team are preparing for their next game against UAE.

O'Brien is in top form this year, scoring his ODI best 80no against Scotland last month, but reckons his 72 in Jamaica eight years ago topped them all.

“I think I played better against Pakistan as I never gave a chance and conditions were much worse for batting that day at Sabina. But I really enjoyed batting the other day at Nelson.

“The coach mentioned that this was our best ever victory because it was such a great team effort from start to finish.

“Kev's innings is the best knock in our cricket history and will never be bettered but as a team Nelson was better.”

The younger O'Brien scored 113no to help beat England in 2011, meaning the brothers from Sandymount, Dublin have been to the fore in all Ireland's major victories.

“I really hope the manner of our win helps us in our stance to get that elusive first test but first of all I would like more and more quality ODI cricket”, said the Leicestershire wicketkeeper.

“I still dream of playing Test match cricket. I regularly dream of scoring a Test hundred and getting my name on honours board at Test grounds but whether that ever happens I am not sure....

“There is so much in the way of us getting there and although we have a path at the moment, things always seem to change so who knows if this dream will ever come true.

“I think we are miles off test at the moment - not from a quality point of view as I know I am good enough to score runs at Test level as are lots of our batsmen - but it's all about opportunity.”
