Young South African bowling all-rounder Liam McCarthy has been named in the Munster Reds squad for this weekend's T20 Festival in Comber.

The 19 year-old from Johannesburg was persuaded to give Irish cricket a go after discussions with Leinster Transition Year students at St Stithians.

Described as a medium-fast right arm opening bowler with a good skills set, strong action, who also possesses an excellent Yorker and decent quicker bouncer in his armoury.

He's also a capable late-order batsman, with the left-hander capable of scoring useful runs.

He has impressed in his debut season with Railway Union taking 16 wickets at 9.88, with an economy rate of 2.86 and a Strike/Rate of 20.86.

McCarthy has Irish ambitions, and is keen to put down his roots here.

He has been training for the past month with Munster, having come highly recommended to Munster Head Coach Ted Williamson by Pete Johnston.

Liam's great-grandmother hails from County Cork, while his great-grandfather was from County Clare.

Munster are boosted by the return of both captain Tyrone Kane and Gareth Delany from injury, with the latter keen to get some game time ahead of matches against UAE and Scotland, and the T20 World Cup.

Munster take on Leinster on Friday (3pm), NW Warriors on Saturday (3pm) and hosts Northern Knights on Sunday (10.30am).
