Bready remained unbeaten in league cricket as their bowlers once again were to the fore as they brushed aside the challenge of Fox Lodge in the Tyrone derby as they romped home by 122 runs.

It was one of their unsung heroes who was in the limelight, with Ian Young grabbing a five wicket haul for the Magheramason side. It will be ten years this month since 34 year-old Young suffered a horrific leg injury in a Senior Cup match at Burndennett.

A broken tibia, fibula and burst vein saw emergency surgery required, and at one stage surgeons feared they may have to amputate the leg. It says much about the character of the player that he has managed to come back after a long absence from the senior ranks to make such an impact, and skipper Scanlon is glad to have him in the side.

“He's been really courageous coming back from such a bad injury, and it’s a real pleasure to have him back in the changing room.” said Scanlon.

“He's old school and very demanding of the younger players both in games and also training.

“Ian has always been really talented so it was just a matter of time for him to rediscover his form which he has done so over the past 18 months.

“He is a really quiet man and doesn’t like the limelight but with performances like he's churning out at the minute certainly warrants more attention. He would have been an absolute certainty to have played at interpro and possibly higher levels if the injury hadn’t occurred.”

There was more good news for Bready this week with the announcement of an Ireland contract for Conor Olphert.

The 25 year-old is studying for a Mechanical Engineering Degree at Jordanstown and has been boosted by a nine-month educational contract. Scanlon paid tribute to Olphert for his dedication to the task.

“Conor had to work extra hard to get where he is and show great mental strength to keep going and going and develop into the bowler he is at the minute.

“He deserves all he gets as he's the quickest bowler in Ireland on his day and is a serious opponent for anyone!

"It shows especially the younger players that if you put in the work both on and off the field you will get what you deserve. Everyone is super proud of him at the club and may it be the first in a long line yet to come.”
