Ireland International Matches
Ireland drew with Scotland
3 Day, Rathmines, 4 August 1921
Scorecard
Derek Scott

This game was ruined by rain which allowed only eight hours play in all. However, that short space of time was almost enough in which to defeat the Scots because when the game ended the visitors were still 35 runs short of the number required to save an innings defeat, and they only had four wickets remaining.

On the first day there was no play until 2:50p.m. Then John Kerr, the Scottish captain, won the toss and batted on a wet but easy wicket. Before the good attendance the visiting batsmen showed a remarkable lack of enterprise. The first hour produced 40 runs for three wickets, two of them run outs. Half the side was out for 47. Eventually Hole and Cockburn brought the score to 66-6 at the tea interval after 100 minutes play. Harrington had Cockburn lbw at 68 and quickly disposed of Watt and Aikman. Now the score was 81-9. Hole and Frazer eventually put some life into the game by adding 28 in 20 minutes for the last wicket. In the entire innings of 109, which lasted 150 minutes, there were only eight fours. There were only three bowlers used. Bob Lambert bowled unchanged while Allen and Harrington shared the other end. In all 69 overs were bowled from which only 103 runs came from the bat. Allen bowled 15 overs for 20 runs; Lambert 34 overs for 57 runs; and Harrington 20 overs for 26 runs. In the 20 minutes remaining Ireland lost a wicket, Heaslip being run out at 13 while attempting a third run.

The second day was a complete blank due to heavy rain.

On the third day the attendance was small and the wicket slow. Kelly was out after adding a single to his overnight 13 and Ganly was bowled by Hole without scoring. Kidd and Power then added 81 for the 4th wicket. Power batted very well for his 30 as did SD Lambert, 24, and Le Peton, 16. Kidd got a chanceless 66 in 85 minutes of beautiful and confident batting. The innings closed at 186 scored in 3½ hours. Hole followed up his successful batting by taking 4-41 in 21 overs. It was Watt, however, who got the two principal wickets, those of Kidd and Lambert, for a duck, and he finished with 3-47. Only 105 minutes remained and Scotland, defending all the time, lost six wickets for 42. It was the captain, Kerr, who saved the side by batting right through the period for 22 not out. Again the same three Irish bowlers were used but this time it was Harrington who bowled unchanged. Their figures make remarkable reading. Allen, 6-0-17-0; Lambert 15-8-14-2; Harrington 20-11-11-3. 41 overs for 42 runs! Harrington had only 11 runs scored off him in one hour 45 minutes.

This was Harrington's last game for Ireland and JB Ganly's first. SD Lambert also bade farewell to international cricket in this match.<
