I Zingari won for the third successive year, and on three different grounds - Phoenix C.C., Vice Regal Grounds and now Coburg Gardens. This game was played for Charles Lawrence's benefit, but bad weather took from the crowd on the first day. The match however was played very late in the season. Lawrence had already been selected to go to Australia with HH Stephenson's team - the first ever to visit Australia. I Zingari had three new players - Capt. Stewart, Capt. ALTottenham (who was based in Ireland) and the great RAH Mitchell. Mitchell was now only 18 and had just left Eton. He played for Oxford University in 1862-1865 and was captain in the last three years when Oxford won each time. In those years he was one of the leading batsmen in England. In 1866 he returned to Eton to teach and this, plus a knee injury, virtually put him out of first class cricket, though he played for I Zingari in Ireland in 1883. For 30 years Mitchell coached cricket at Eton and became a legend there. He died in 1905, just a few days before he was to be nominated as President of MCC. Before this match I Zingari were beaten by the Garrison by an innings. I Zingari were bowled out by Posnet and Foster for only 51 and 60 and the Garrison made 175 (F Watson 51). None of the Garrison XI played for Ireland.

The weather was bad when the match began, but, in view of this, a reasonable crowd was present and at the lunch interval the Lord Lieutenant and his Chief Secretary (Sir Robert Peel) arrived. J McCormick (still playing as "J Bingley") opened with E Tredcroft to the bowling of Lawrence and Samuels. Lawrence caught and bowled McCormick for 2. Tredcroft was, as usual, steady, and made 15 before being caught off Samuels. Mitchell was also bowled by the slow lob bowler (Samuels) for only 5 and Leigh made 14. Fellows made 28, top score of the match, in first rate style and was beautifully caught by Roberts. Fitzgerald at no. 8 made 24 by beautiful play before he too fell to a Roberts catch - a high one handed catch dashing forward. This was Robert's third splendid catch in the innings. The last 4 wickets fell as the score moved from 99 to 102 and Samuels clean bowled Lord Skelmersdale and Tottenham with successive balls. Samuels ended with 5 wickets and T Quinn 4.

After lunch GF Barry and T Quinn opened for Ireland to the bowling of McCormick and Mitchell, the latter being medium pace. Barry was out for 0, caught by McCormick off Mitchell. Quinn (7) and Roberts (6) batted steadily but wickets fell rapidly. Hone at No. 4 was out first ball bowled by Mitchell and Lawrence, at no. 6, was caught off McCormick, also first ball. Brenan and H Hodgson stopped the rot. Brenan is well known as a good bat but the youthful Hodgson surprised all. Fellows came on for Mitchell and bowled 8 wides in a very short time but he also soon bowled Brenan (21) and Hodgson (16). He also bowled Samuels and then Mitchell came back and the innings finished for only 62 - 40 runs behind. Doyle was nought not out batting at no. 8 - much too late it was felt. By close of play I Zingari were 16 for 1. Quinn bowled Creyke for 0 and Tredcroft (7) and Mitchell (8) were not out.

The second day was very fine and a bigger crowd (again including the Lord Lieutenant) attended. Tredcroft got 9 more and Mitchell 3 more, the latter being run out. Fitzgerald again batted splendidly and hit a 6 out of the ground and 2 fours in his 26 not out. The celebrated McCormick got 0 - bowled by Lawrence. Quinn got 5 wickets and I Zingari were all out for 77. Ireland needed 118 to win but were bowled out for 68. G.F.Barry (21) and Lawrence (20) tried to turn the fortunes of the game but Barry was run out and Lawrence was caught by Mitchell off McCormick. Soon after 4.00pm Capt. F.Marshall caught Despard off Mitchell and the game was over. This was Marshall's third catch of the innings and he was one for 4 I Zingari players who at some time played for Ireland. The other three were McCormick, Creyke and Fitzgerald. McCormick took 8 wickets in the match - his last for I Zingari. In three matches in this series McCormick took 22 wickets for I Zingari.

After beating Ireland I Zingari beat both Phoenix and Dublin University, Mitchell making 70 in the latter match.
