The Catamarans were a team of Indian students resident in England. It contained two men who, in the future, played Test Cricket. The Nawab of Pataudi had, a fortnight previously, scored 106 and 84 for Oxford in the University Match and in 1932 he was destined to make a century in his first test against Australia. In 1946 Pataudi captained India. S Nazeer Ali was also to play Test Cricket for India. Three members of the Irish team which had been selected to play in this game cried off. They were Bookman, Harris and Barnes. They were replaced by Lloyd, O'Donnell and Reddy. Interestingly, none of the three who came into the side had been nominated amongst the substitutes.

On the first day of the game rain prevented any play. The result of this game was largely due to the rain and a wicket that played pranks. The Catamarans won the toss and put Ireland into bat. Nazeer Ali, bowling his fast swingers and cutters on a drying pitch, quickly accounted for Kelly and O'Donnell. Lloyd and Ingram then produced the only stand of the innings, 60 for the third wicket. Ingram was lucky but batted brightly for his 33. After this stand the remaining six wickets fell for 38 runs, chiefly to Nazeer Ali who emerged with seven wickets for 34. The Catamarans also made a bad start, losing four wickets for 17 runs, including Pataudi, run out for a "duck". Boucher's first wicket in International Cricket was Reddy whom he bowled for four. Foenander and Stoute added 56 for the fifth wicket but in 2¼ hours the side was out for 115. Boucher bowled best in a well-balanced Irish attack. At the end of the first actual day Ireland had scored 31-1 in their second innings. Reddy was 18 not out. He, too, was playing his first game for Ireland and had been promoted from number 10 to opening in the second innings.

On the third day Reddy and Lloyd took the score to 43 before Reddy was bowled for 26. Ingram helped to add another 38. The light was now poor and scoring was difficult. At 91 Piachaud caught and bowled Lloyd for an invaluable 38, the highest score of the match. Ganly and Kelly put on 31 for the eighth wicket and the innings closed at 147 after 2½ hours. Nazeer Ali was again dangerous and took 4-53.

Set 163 to win the Catamarans only looked like getting them when Pataudi and Nazeer Ali were together for the third wicket. Ingram had Pataudi lbw for 18 (his first international wicket, and what an illustrious one!) and Dixon bowled Nazeer Ali for 26. Then Boucher and Dixon went through the remainder of the side. The Irish fielding was very keen and Loughrey took two very fine catches off Dixon who finished with 5-28.
