The wicket was taking spin on the first day and at the close the Irish were one for no wicket in their second innings. Scoring was very slow all day as a result of the responsive wicket of which Boucher and Bowden availed to spin Scotland out for 80 in reply to Ireland's 134. In the Irish innings Bergin's dour 30 lasted 96 minutes and Henderson bowled 9 maidens in his first 10 overs. Boucher enlivened the game with a fine 24 not out in half-an-hour. Laidlaw bowled his leg breaks and googlies very well, but Boucher and Newburn were allowed to add 32 for the last wicket.
The opening pair for Scotland, Chisholm and Sheppard, were the only batsmen to offer any resistance to the Irish spinners. The pair put on 39 for the first wicket but the side were out for 80 - Bowden having a spell of 6-14. The second day was dull and uninteresting. Ireland took 190 minutes to make 153 in their second innings - Pollock, 32, being the only batsmen showing any enterprise. At the close of day two Scotland were 107-7.
Next day the remaining three Scottish wickets fell quickly and Ireland won eventually by 73 runs. The feature of the second Scottish innings was the accurate medium pace bowling of Tom Newburn making his debut in international cricket. He bowled 19 overs for 23 runs and three wickets. In the first Scottish innings he had bowled nine overs for eight runs. Unfortunately, however, a place could not be found for Newburn in the last match of the season at Lord's three weeks later.
