I Zingari gained a lucky draw in this the 8th match against Ireland. At the end they were 76 behind with only one wicket left. IZ wished to draw stumps at 5 30 on the second day and have a third day's play. Some of the Irish players were unable to do this and it was agreed to play until 6 00 on the 2nd day, thus giving IZ 145 minutes to get 175 runs. Five wickets were lost in the semi darkness of the last half hour. The IZ team was not a very good one and 9 of the 12 were playing against Ireland for the first time. Three of the nine had actually played for Ireland in the 1867-68-69 seasons. They were AJ McNeile, WH Walrond and AH Smith-Barry and indeed Walrond had played in both the earlier matches in the 1869 season. Only the bowlers Mordaunt and Horner and HNTennent had previously played for IZ in this game. Hon. EC Leigh, who had played in the original 1859 game, was again captain of the party but did not play in this game. One notable player in the IZ team was W.F.Maitland who performed brilliantly for Oxford v Cambridge for four years, 1864-1867, being captain in 1867. He was an all rounder who lived to be 88. This was the 6th and last match of the IZ 1869 Irish tour - they had won two and drawn 4. Hutchinson, Mordaunt and McNeile had been in very good batting form. The Irish team was selected and captained by GF Barry at the request of the Lord Lieutenant who had sponsored the match and put up the IZ party. It was a powerful team, but perhaps a little deficient in bowling. The Hon. EC Leigh in an article in Lawrence's handbook suggested that W Hunt of Cork was the best bowler in Ireland but he was not asked to play. Of those whose last match for Ireland this was Ashton (as an all rounder) and Hudson (wicket-keeper) in particular had rendered good service.

The first day brought gales and showers but the ground was in good order. It was decided to play 12-a-side and N.Hone completed the Irish XII. R Jones and WS Ashton opened the Irish innings to Mordaunt and Horner's bowling. These two bore the brunt of the bowling although Hutchinson, Middleton and Maitland bowled a few overs in relief. Jones was stumped at 3 off Horner and Evans run out at 8. PF Casey, of whom much was expected, was caught off Horner for 5 at 19. Ashton got 18 and he and Filgate took the score to 34 for 3. In no time it was 38 for 8 - Mordaunt taking 5 wickets in rapid succession. TJS Casey and W Hone Jnr. turned the tide and added 61 for the 9th wicket. These runs were made quickly before Mordaunt had Casey caught for 41 (one 4 and 5 3's). Hone was run out for 31 at 114 and almost at once Hudson was bowled. The innings closed at 2 00 pm and Mordaunt had taken 6 for 44 with his slows.

At 3 00 pm, after lunch, McNeile and J.Round, M.P., opened for IZ against O'Mara and Barry. McNeile got 3 in O'Mara's first over but was bowled by Barry's first ball. Tennent came in but lost Round at 6. He was caught by Filgate off a very good hit to leg off Barry. WF Maitland was no. 4 and at 20 TCasey replaced Barry. Off his first ball Tennent was "permitted to enjoy the comfortable shelter of the marquee". 20-3-10. At 23 Hutchinson was caught off O'Mara but Maitland and Kingscote put on 25 before Maitland was run out. 48-5-14. Smith-Barry was bowled by Ashton (who had replaced O'Mara) at 52. The 7th wicket fell at 65 when Walrond was bowled by T Casey. The Hon. E Stanhope was next and he and Kingscote took the score to 92. N Hone, who did not bowl much, came on and bowled Kingscote for a hard hit 41. The 9th wicket fell at 99 and the 10th at 110, Middleton and Horner, the last pair, got the lead for IZ and at 6 00 pm, Hone bowled Middleton to end the innings and the day's play. The Irish fielding had been very good and five bowlers shared the wickets.

The second day's weather was by contrast fine and a big crowd attended. The Irish batting order was changed about but there were 3 out for 29. A stand took the score to 83 but 4 wickets fell in the 80's and 8 were out for 111. The tail wagged and the last 3 wickets added 67. Filgate made a most excellent 39 while W Hone Jnr's 27 was equalled only by his first innings score of 31. Others contributed their share and O'Mara was going well when he was brilliantly run out by a return from Mordaunt at point to Round, the wicket-keeper. Kingscote had been hit in the face by a ball and Round had taken over as wicket-keeper. The IZ Fielding was good, though Filgate had been missed at point. Maitland took 5 for 65 in 42 overs.

At 3 35 pm IZ went in search of 175 runs to win. Horner, promoted from no. 12, and Round were out for 1 amid great cheers. 5 were out for 43 then Maitland (39) and Stanhope (16) doubled the score. This was the only stand made. Barry bowled Maitland and PF Casey came on and took 3 quick wickets including the laudably patient Stanhope. Tennent and Middleton held out and play stopped as the clock struck 6, apparently in the middle of an over from PF Casey! Over anxiety in the Maitland Stanhope stand led to a catch being dropped which might have won the match. Smith-Barry was run out for 0 when Filgate fielded an overthrow and hit the wicket direct.
