For this match Yashpal Sharma and Doshi (who played for MCC against Ireland in 1977) replaced Roy and Vishwanath. For Ireland Harte came in for Harpur as arranged and AJ Hughes replaced Elder, who was injured. The sun shone but the wicket was always damp after yesterday's rain. Ireland, again more or less at India's request, batted first. They did well against the seamers and reached 72-2 and 92-3 in 30 overs. But Shastri and Doshi, both Test slow left-handers, caused a collapse only partially redeemed by Jackson. However, India, too, struggled for runs and lost five wickets before winning. The match started 30 minutes late to allow a lot of rolling and was confined to 50 overs each - bowlers to bowl a maximum of 10 overs.

Short played a terrible shot to Singh's fourth ball and Parkar, diving, caught a good catch at the wicket. Wills hit his first ball for four and all went serenely for a while. Singh conceded 26 runs in five overs but Madan Lal only 12 in his 5. Patil and Nayak, both seamers, were tried and 50 came up in the 14th over with the runs well shared. Then Patil bowled Wills. 55-2-27. Shastri, 20 years old today, and a slow left armer, replaced Nayak. In his third over he bowled Anderson. 72-3-7. Prior pottered around for 24 balls making three. Yadav, off spin, replaced Patil but it was Shastri who struck twice in successive overs just before lunch. He had Prior caught at the wicket.

Then McDermott went to his 50 off Yadav (in 111 minutes off 92 balls out of 93 runs, with four fours). Next over he popped one and Parkar dived forward to catch him. McDermott played well but was in trouble on this drying pitch as soon as spin was introduced. Harte and Corlett were both 0 not out at lunch, taken after 33 overs with the score on 93-5. Now Doshi, slow left arm, and Shastri bowled together. At 100, in Doshi's fourth over, Harte went for his favorite sweep and was caught at square leg. In Doshi's next over, at 102, Corlett was caught behind. Jackson and Torrens put on 13. Then Torrens was stumped in Doshi's seventh over. Jackson hit about to score 16 but he became Doshi's fourth victim when he was caught and bowled in the bowlers ninth over. Halliday (7) and Hughes (0) concentrated on batting out the 50 overs and six more were added. India tried seven bowlers in all. Shastri had 3-20 in his 10 overs and Doshi had 4-11 in 9.

Gavaskar and Shastri opened to Corlett and Torrens. The wicket was difficult and the bat was passed but after 10 overs 25 runs had been scored. Halliday put himself on for Torrens. Shastri gave two difficult chances to McDermott off Corlett and Halliday dropped a hard caught and bowled chance off Gavaskar. The latter brought 50 up in the 18th over with a four. Two balls later Harte caught him off Halliday with a very good catch at midwicket on the boundary.

Anderson replaced Corlett (0-23 in 10 overs), and Madan Lal came in at number three. The tea interval came with the score on 81-1 after 25 overs, Shastri 41, Madan Lal 12. With the score on 86 Jackson made a good stumping off Anderson to dismiss Shastri. 86-2-43. Next over Nayak was caught by Jackson off Halliday for one. This was Halliday's last over and he took 2-34. Anderson changed ends and Hughes came on. Madan Lal began to speed up and the new batsmen, Yashpal Sharma kept pace. Then, in his fifth over, Hughes caught and bowled both Madan Lal (37) and Mahotra (0). 128-5. With rain threatening Short bowled and conceded five runs in three balls to Sharma and Patil. India won in the 42nd over.

The Man-of-the-Match awards went to McDermott for Ireland and to Parkar for his 35 runs yesterday and five wicket keeping dismissals today and to Ravi Shastri for his all round performance today. They were cut glass engraved tankards. The Indians were very pleasant and were well managed by Raj Singh and his assistant Nagaraj. Raj Singh invited Ireland to make a three-week trip to India in January 1983.
