On a much better pitch, if slow, at Malahide, Worcester made merry. The Irish fielding and catching was not the best but the large crowd enjoyed three good 50s by Worcester and a fine performance by Harrison which won him the Irish Man-of-the-Match award from sponsors JMA, pounds 100 cheque for Harrison and pounds 2500 to ICU. Patterson came into the Irish team instead of Garth and Lord dropped out for Worcester with Leatherdale coming in.

Jackson for Ireland was injured and was replaced by KR Bailey. Warke took over as captain. Due to heavy rain in the night the start had to be delayed until 12.30, 30 minutes after the start had been scheduled. Milling and Patterson could not stem the flow of runs from O'Shaughnessy and Illingworth. They had 50 up in 12.4 overs but Milling was unlucky. At 23 he almost caught and bowled O'Shaughnessy (then on 15) and at 43 Illingworth (then 14) gave a high chance to Warke at slip.

Nelson was tried at 49 and Halliday got on at 63. O'Shaughnessy went to 50 in 67 minutes but in Halliday's third over, with the score on 86, he was caught at long-on. Leatherdale came in and by lunch, taken at 2 PM after 24 overs, the score was 107-1, Illingworth 32, Leatherdale 13. The hundred had come up in 22.5 overs.

In 31 overs after lunch 179 were scored, with short quick partnerships for each wicket except the seventh which added 59 in 29 minutes. Halliday shared the post lunch bowling with Harrison and the former took the next two wickets. In his eighth over he bowled Illingworth. 125-2-42. Hick arrived and soon hit Harrison for a towering six. 150 came up in 35 overs. Then, in his 10th over, Halliday had Leatherdale caught at long leg. This was at 144.

Hick was playing beautifully, mostly into the V in front of him. Harrison chipped in with a wicket in his last over when he caught and bowled D'Oliveira. 183-4-13. Newport played himself in and then began to attack. 200 came up in 44.3 overs. Lewis had come on for Halliday and Hick hit him far into the public park for another massive six. Next ball he was dropped by Nelson at mid-wicket. He seemed to have had enough because the next ball he faced, from Milling, he picked out Cohen at mid-wicket and was out for 51 scored in 58 minutes off 46 balls. 208-5-51.

Weston was out to the first ball he faced, caught at the wicket off Lewis. 208-6-0. Rhodes came in and made 12 of a stand of 59 with Newport. In the last nine overs bowled by four different bowlers 78 were put on of which Newport made 47. Nelson bowled the 51st over of which 23 came - a single to Rhodes, then 2-4-4-6-6 to Newport bringing up 250. Milling bowled the next over and Cohen, at 256, dropped Newport (then 46) at long-on.

Patterson bowled the 53rd over and Newport was caught at mid-off by Warke. 267-7-55. Newport was in for 50 minutes and faced 40 deliveries and hit two sixes and six fours. It won him the JMA Worcester Man-of-the-Match Award. Rhodes was run out off the last ball for 27. As usual, the spinners had done best. Halliday and Harrison took four wickets and their 22 overs cost 85 runs.

Faced with a score of 286 it has to be said that Ireland made no effort to contest the match. Five of the first 7 overs from Newport and Pridgeon were maidens and Warke was out in the seventh, caught at second slip of Newport. 3-1-2. Masood scored five in 19 balls and then flat batted McEwan to cover. 18-2-5 in the 13th over. At 33 Cohen was run out taking a sharp single when the fielder hit the stumps. 33-3-19.

Harrison and Lewis rallied the innings until tea after 30 overs. The score then was 67-3, Harrison 22, Lewis 13. D' Oliveira's off-spin took the next two wickets. Lewis (still on 13) was bowled with the score on 68 and McCollum (seven) was LBW with the score on 84. 100 came up in 38.4 overs but Patterson (10) departed at 104, another D' Oliveira victim - caught at extra-cover. Harrison was going very well and scoring, mostly singles, off a high percentage of balls faced. He reached his 50 in 86 minutes off 90 deliveries with a six off Illingworth, back for a second spell. In the next over O'Shaughnessy bowled Halliday.123-7-4.

Bailey arrived and scored his first runs for Ireland in his fourth match but only his second innings. He saw Harrison knock Illingworth for another six, and then hit two fours and a six (also of Illingworth) himself. 150 was now up in 51.4 overs. The pair added 38 in 16 minutes and was the best stand of the innings. At 161 Illingworth had his revenge when he caught and bowled Bailey for 15. The match ended in some farce with wicket-keeper Rhodes bowling the last over without shoes or shirt. However, its first ball saw Harrison caught at slip for 76 in 111 minutes, off 116 deliveries, with two sixes and five fours. He did not deserve to be out while the farce was going on.
