This was a great day for Irish Cricket! There was a crowd estimated at 4000, a gate of pounds 10,500, generous sponsors in AIB and Gilbey's Ulster Games, live BBC television, sunshine and Mexican waves in the evening all contributed to a "fun day". Down County Council hosted a pre-match evening meal in Newcastle. The Downpatrick pitch was slower than usual but West Indies had no problem and Ireland easily held out.

For Ireland Vincent came in for Rea who was unable to go on the following week's British Tour. Smyth came in for McCrum to pack the batting. West Indies dominance of England came to an end in 1991. The Test Series was drawn at 2-2. This match was played after the third test at Trent Bridge which West Indies won to level the series at that point to 1 each. From that test team Haynes, Simmons, Hooper, Logie, Walsh and Allen played against Ireland. Haynes was captain as IVA Richards did not travel, and the injured Greenidge was out of action.

Simmons and Lambert started for West Indies at 11 AM, Nelson and Thompson bowling. By West Indies standards the start was quite sedate. Simmons had three fours in Thompson's fourth over and 50 was up in 13.5. Simmons, in the midst of his boundary hitting, gave Hoey a searing chance at mid-off off the bowling of Thompson - the only Irish dropped catch. Hoey came on to bowl with the score at 54 and Lewis came on with the score at 71. Lambert hit Lewis for 3 fours in an over and 94 was reached in 25 overs. Then Hoey took 2 wickets in 4 balls. Simmons had just reached 50 when he hoisted Hoey to Thompson at long-off.

The youthful left-handed Lara came in, hit a 4, then pulled to deep square leg where Cohen took an outstanding running catch. Logie joined Lambert and in 11 more overs up to lunch (which came at 1:15 PM) the score rose from 98 to 136-2, Lambert 54, Logie 26. After lunch 23 more overs were bowled and no less than 185 runs were scored - eight runs an over! In this period Harrison's 4 overs only yielded 19 but all the other 4 bowlers suffered badly - Nelson 48 runs in 4 overs; Thompson 38 in 5; Hoey 30 in 4 and Lewis 48 in 6. Lambert and Logie put on 181 in 98 minutes and 29 overs. Logie got to 50 in 53 minutes and 100 in 95 minutes. 100 to 150 took 13 overs, 150 to 200, 8.3, 200 to 250, 5.2 overs.

Logie, small of stature, was scintillating in his strokeplay. He hit Nelson for 2 sixes in one over and he scored 15 fours as well. Lambert batted 194 minutes for his 105 with 2 sixes and 13 fours. At 279 Lambert was out. He skied Lewis behind the wicket and Jackson ran 30 yards to catch it. At 287 Logie "retired hurt" but it was really to let in Haynes who finished by hitting one massive 6 off Lewis. In all West Indies batted 60 overs for 321. The Irish fielding was good but sagged towards the end as did the bowlers who dropped short too often. In all 8 sixes and 40 fours were hit.

Patterson, trying to recover from injury, and the youthful Allen opened the West Indies bowling to Warke and Cohen. Neither caused much stir and off-spinner Hooper was used before tea. The interval came after nine overs with the score on 23-0. It was Hooper who took the first wicket in the 14th over having Cohen caught lifting a drive to deep mid-on. 33-1-17. Smyth joined Warke. The two other fast bowlers, Walsh and Anthony, were tried but 50 was up in 20.5 overs. Warke gave a stumping chance off Hooper but he hit 8 fours in his 44, including 3 in one Anthony over - all over or wide of slips! Then both batsmen were out in successive overs. Warke advanced to Hooper and would have been stumped but was, in fact, bowled. 88-2-44. The stand of 55 were scored at a run a minute. Then Smyth was caught at the wicket off Anthony for 18.

Patterson joined Lewis and saw 100 up in 33.5 overs. Patterson hit 2 fours but at 115 Lewis refused a run and Patterson could not get back. Lewis hit Hooper for a six and for the last 6 overs he and Vincent enjoyed themselves when Haynes and Lara bowled. 27 came off these overs but Haynes had Vincent (16) caught off his last ball. Lewis had a merry 41 not out off 54 balls with a six and 4 fours. The huge crowd had a good day as had Irish cricket. Logie and Warke won the AIB Man-of-the-Match awards.
