A great win over England on a Test Match arena, and the second leg of the Triple Crown. All seemed lost when the seventh English wicket put on 23 and brought them within 20 runs a victory with 4.3 overs still go. Waterton, ex Kent, was 66. Then came C McCrum. He took four wickets in seven balls to win a famous victory.

Ireland brought in the now fit C McCrum to replace Moore, a team which now had Harrison as low as number eight. England had six of the players who played against Ireland in 1992. Dean and Roberts were scoring runs freely at all levels. On a hard flat wicket on a sunny day Ireland's 194 did not seem enough- but such is cricket. Cohen and Rea started well if slowly. Roshier and Evans were the opening bowlers followed by van Lint.

46 were scored in 19.2 overs when the new ball had Rea caught at mid-off. Curry (20) helped Cohen add 39 in even time and the running improved. Then French, the fifth bowler, had Curry LBW hitting across the line in his first over. Smyth and Cohen saw 100 up in 33.1 overs. Then French got another LBW, cutting one back at Cohen. 103-3-42, in the 33rd over. Lunch came at 104-3 in 37 overs, Smyth 9, Warke 1.

In the remaining 18 overs Ireland scored 90 and lost three more wickets. At 112 Smyth was stumped hitting to leg with his head up. Lewis edged the next ball to square leg. Warke, suffering with his back, now did his best. He and McCrum put on 40 in eight overs before McCrum was LBW. In the remaining 6.4 overs Warke and Harrison managed 42. 194 was not great but it was something to bowl at. England used five bowlers. Roshier's 11 overs cost 29 but he took no wicket. Van Lint and Evans both had 2-32. Hackett (49) and French (48) with the most expensive.

At 3:30 PM the formidable pair of Dean and Waterton opened for England Amateur. There was a surprise for them. Nelson opened but legspinner Hoey shared the new ball. It worked! In Hoey's fourth over Dean snicked to slip where Warke held a good low catch. 25-1-11. Roberts came in. Lewis was first change with the total on 39 and Harrison followed him with the total on 44. 50 came up in 16.1 overs. Then, in the 17th over, bowled by Harrison, Roberts played to McCrum at cover, called a run, was sent back but failed to beat McCrum's throw to Miller. The two stars were out for 20. Waterton (31) and Hussain (10) took the score up to 74 in the 25 overs to tea.

Hoey came back and yorked Hussain with the total on 93 in his second last over. Five overs later Curry, in his second over, the 30th, caught and bowled Farooque. 101-4. Waterton went to his 50 off 129 balls. Joined by Clark they put on 31 quickly. Nelson, coming back, had Clark LBW hitting to leg. 132-5 in 43 overs, Waterton 57. There were 12 overs to go and 63 required. Lewis came back and took a wicket in his second over - the 48th. This was another LBW, Roshier looking to leg with his head up. In came French. 23 were added in 19 balls, helped by four wides by Lewis.

Then came McCrum for the 51st over. He had earlier bowled four overs for 20. 26 were now needed. French, playing well, took 3 twos off McCrum's first three balls. Then, foolishly hitting across the line, he skied the ball to cover. Waterton had crossed and was LBW next ball. Lewis bowled the 52nd over for 5 runs. 15 were now needed in three overs. Four balls were enough. McCrum caught and bowled van Lint and Evans with the first and fourth balls of the 53rd over. A famous victory! Former England captain MJ K Smyth could only give C McCrum the cup for Man-of-the-Match. He had 4-27 in 5.4 overs. Nelson, Hoey and Harrison all bowled inexpensively.
