A lovely sunny day but a poor match. The home team batted half an hour beyond the midway point and faced 65 overs. Ireland were left 203 to win in 81 minutes +20 overs. This turned out to be 46 overs. The problem arose in the morning two hour session when Lavinia's XI only managed 87-1 off 37 overs. The Irish hope was that they would take wickets as an acceleration came but this did not happen. Ireland were without Jackson, Nelson and Harrison. A first cap was given to Brian Gilmore (Cohen was left out of this match) and Dunlop returned to the team. AIB did not have their usual marquee. The home team assembled a reasonable team without stars. They had some ex Cambridge Blues and WA Donald, the ex-Scotland player.

Ireland won the toss and elected to field first. Donald and Mills had a sedate opening. 50 came up in 18.2 overs. C McCrum was the fifth bowler tried for the 29th over. The last ball of his first over had Mills caught as extra cover while driving. 73-1-40. By lunch, taken after 37 overs, Donald was only 29 out of a total of 87-1, with Townsend 4. 100 came up in 43.4 overs - not much progress. Then Donald, losing patience, was stumped off Hoey. 100-2-36. Donald had been in for 140 minutes. Mac Millan and Townsend got 22 in 10 minutes when Warke caught the newcomer at slip off Hoey. 122-3-8. D Holliday added a bit of life. He got 30 out of 55 in 40 minutes off 41 balls, hitting Dunlop for two sixes. Dunlop and Hoey were being used to buy wickets.

The last five overs were bowled by the openers, P McCrum and Moore. In his first of these overs, off the first ball in fact, Moore had Holliday caught at the wicket. Townsend went to his 50 in 102 minutes. The last five overs produced 25 runs. Townsend finished on 65*. He hit 10x4 and 1x6 but faced 103 balls in all. Dunlop was the unlucky bowler of the day. His 20 wicketless overs cost only 60.

Ireland had an awkward 53 minutes before tea with Gilmore, the newcomer, partnering Rea. Both had difficulty getting Harris and Waters away. Only 37 runs were scored in these 15 overs, Gilmore 16, Rea 18, and this was not enough to hope to win. Spinners Appleyard and Weare now in tandem. At 46 Gilmore was LBW for 20. Dunlop skied to deepish mid-off with the total on 49. Holliday was given two overs of leg spin. Rea and Warke feasted to the tune of 21 off these two overs. These two began the last hour with 136 needed. They got 64 of them in 31 minutes.

Rea went to 50 in 96 minutes but at 123 he was caught at deep mid-wicket for 67. Then wickets fell rapidly. At 126 Warke was stumped. At 138 Smyth skied to mid-off. At 152 C McCrum was caught and bowled. At 161 Lewis was caught at extra cover - the last four wickets all falling to Appleyard. Hoey and P McCrum played out the last three overs. This turned out to be Gilmore's only match for Ireland. He had been a prolific run scorer at club and interprovincial level.
