This second match at Waringstown, in contrast to yesterday, was played on a fine sunny day and the wind had dropped. Again, in contrast, Ireland put up a poor display which was epitomised by Steve Waugh's first ball dismissal. Ireland were out for 138 in 47 overs and only a ninth wicket stand carried the total over 100. The runs were knocked off in the 31st over with McCallan taking the only two wickets that fell.

The date was August 27th, Don Bradman's 90th birthday. He was toasted at lunch time as were three others who shared the birthday. Hills and Bichel on the Australian team, who were both 28 to-day, and Kyle McCallan of Ireland who was 23.

For Ireland Heasley, now recovered, replaced Joyce while Australia left out Hills and Gillespie. Hussey kept wicket as Campbell had a slightly damaged hand.

The pitch kicked a little. Ireland chose to bat. The fourth ball of the match from Bichel rose at McCallan and he was caught at gully. Smyth was unhappy and slashed at most of his six balls. He hit two fours off Bichel's second over, with dangerous shots, and was caught at the wicket off the fifth ball. Enter Waugh who drove firm footed at his first ball, wide on the off, and was caught at third man. 10 for three! Gillespie made one off 12 balls and was lbw on the front foot to Dale at 15. Meanwhile Carson had made four singles off 21 balls when he was joined by Dunlop. This stand realised 27 and occupied 10 overs with Dunlop having most of the strike. Julian replaced Bichel but Dale bowled his stint of 10 overs without a break. Julian took the fifth wicket in the 17th over at 42. Carson square cut him for his only four. An attempted repeat off the next ball, which was too high to cut, gave Hussey a fine wicket-keeping catch - high to his right and one handed. Carson's 12 had occupied 42 balls.

Dunlop now had to rescue the innings and he certainly did the best he could. He carefully selected balls to hit for four and did a good job of keeping the strike. With Cooke 44 were added in just over 12 overs during which Cooke faced 23 balls in scoring nine. By the time Cooke was out Dunlop had reached 41, with six fours, and given two half chances. Miller came on for the 29th over with off spin and got Cooke in his first over. He drove straight into cover's stomach. 86-6-9. With a four to square leg off Miller Dunlop reached 52 with the score at 91. At 94 Miller bowled Heasley "through the gate" and at 99 Miller dismissed Dunlop. The latter put up a very high skier which the bowler caught at the third attempt. Dunlop's 57 had come off 104 balls with seven fours. Bushe joined Mooney and both did very well to put on 32 in nine overs from Miller, Young (10 overs for 21) and then Julian. It was the latter who eventually got Bushe. He cross batted a wide short ball to mid-off. 131-9-10. Dwyer failed to score being bowled by Miller who had taken four for 28 in 9.5 overs. Bichel's three wickets cost 32 in eight overs. Mooney's batting should not be forgotton. At number nine he made 24 not out off 46 balls with three fours, coming in at 94 for seven

Hussey opened for Australia "A" with Hayden and attacked from the start. The stand put on 44 in 55 balls. Hayden faced 25 of them and made three! In Cooke's first over Hussey hooked a four and a six. Mooney bowled a maiden to Hayden. Then Hussey took 10 off Cooke's second over including a cover drive and a leg glance for fours. Heasley replaced Cooke (23 in two overs) but his first over cost eight. McCallan came on for Mooney and got a wicket in his third over, the tenth of the innings. Hayden skied to Mooney at mid-off. 44-1-3.

Di Venuto was next. With two square drives for four, each off Heasley, he brought up 50 in the 11th over. In the 13th over Hussey hit Heasley for four and then hooked a six. A four in McCallan's next over brought Hussey to 52 in 40 balls out of 73, with two sixes and six fours. Dwyer came on for Heasley and was his old self again after a mauling the previous day. He bowled seven overs for 17 runs including two maidens. After a stand of 43 in 51 balls Di Venuto was out at 87. He swept McCallan low to Gillespie at deep backward square leg and that sure handed fielder held on. 87-2-22.

The remaining 52 runs were hit off by Hussey and Symonds in just under 13 overs. 100 was up in over 22. Cooke returned for over 28 and was greeted by cover driven and hooked fours by Hussey. The end came in 30.3 overs. Hussey's 78 came in 83 balls with two sixes and nine fours. McCallan was the only Irish bowler to bowl a full stint of 10 overs and he took both wickets that fell for 33 runs.
