This fourth match followed the day after the Denmark match and was over very quickly at the Ayr CC's splendid new ground which is just across the road from the old Cambusdoon. The match only lasted 56.2 overs and was over at 2.30 p.m. The pitch was fairly new. It had a rather low bounce and was not as hard as those at Hamilton Crescent or Titwood. The day was overcast.

Ireland brought in the two Joyce brothers in place of Gillespie and Archer. The brothers, the 54th pair to play for Ireland, created history by opening the innings, the first of all the pairs of brothers to do so. Italy could not field, due to injury, Joe Scuderi, their Australian Italian currently playing for Lancashire. Peter Di Venuto is brother of Australian Test player Michael.

Italy won the toss and took a brave decision to bat. All went reasonably well for a while, 33 for one in the 13th over. Then came the spinners and the innings closed for 74 in the 37th over.

Jayasena (left hand) and Bonora were Italy's opening bats. Mooney bowled seven overs and Cooke six, probably far too long for both. Mooney took the only wicket that fell to speed. In the eighth over he drifted one away from Jayasena who was caught at the wicket. 23-1-17. Jayasena hit three of the eight fours in the innings and no one else got more than one. This stand of 23 was the best of the innings. Two others were in double figures, 10 for the second wicket and 11 for the fourth. Dwyer bowled the 13th over. His fifth ball, a faster one, bowled Bonora on the back foot. 33-2-9. Dwyer took his second wicket in the 15th over when Di Venuto was LBW. McCallan had come on for the 16th over. Starting in his third over he took five of the next six wickets to fall. Corbellari hit a big six to mid wicket and was LBW next ball.

Giordano faced 53 balls, by far the longest innings. In the 24th over he drove across McCallan and Cooke caught high to his right at short mid-wicket. At 60 Qureshi was next to go, swinging wildly. Dwyer nipped in to take the seventh wicket in his last over (10-5-10-3); Zuppiroli pushed a simple catch to short extra cover. McCallan also took wickets in his 9th and 10th overs. He finished with 10-5-23-5 and equalled DW McGerrigle's Irish record of taking five wickets in a limited overs (50) match. Kariyawasam was lbw, walking before he was given out and Mazzoncini met a similar fate on the back foot.

White had replaced Dwyer and took the last wicket in his third over - Passaretti skied to the wicket-keeper in the 31st over. This was Rutherford's 50th catch in his 49th match. McCallan's rare feat won him the Man-of-the-Match Award. The pitch did take spin but it was a sorry batting display. When Ireland batted it was intended to play up to 2.20 p.m., giving Ireland an hour's batting before lunch was taken. In fact this period was extended by some 10 minutes in order to complete the match. 19.3 overs were sufficient but Ireland were careless to lose four wickets in making 78 runs. A. Joyce missed opening bowler's (Corbellari) line and was bowled at five. Leg-spinner Jayasena accounted for the remaining three wickets. He came on for the ninth over and took a wicket in his second over. D Joyce hit three fours (one all run) and was lbw playing back square on but the ball kept low. 34-2-23.

Haire was dropped at mid-wicket before he scored off Corbellari. Then he and McCallan put on 23 for the third wicket. Haire then swept at Jayasena and was given lbw on the front foot. At 66 McCallan pushed out and was caught at slip Dunlop finished the match with a couple of fours.
