After a day's rest this final match would decide third and fourth places. Holland were to win the Cup with no defeats. England would be second losing only to Holland. Both Scotland and Ireland had lost to the above two. For the 11th time of the last 12 in Competitive limited overs matches Scotland won. Two of these were bowl outs but Ireland's last win was the first match played in the Developing Nations Tournament in Zimbabwe in April and that was by the Duckworth /Lewis system and that win was far from sure were the match played out.

The day was sunny and warm. The pitch was dry and hard. Ireland left out Butler, Gillespie and Haire. Butler might well have been chanced for his speed with McCoubrey left out. Ireland won the toss, only the second in 10 matches in the domestic season of 10 matches. They decided to bat.
In a total of 183 for nine in 50 overs there were five partnerships of 25 or more, from the second wicket to the sixth, but none of the five got beyond 39, an indication of an inability to build partnerships. Again six players reached 14 or more but none got as far as 40. In the second over Ireland had two Scottish wickets down for one run and four were out for 13. Then the left handed Parsons and Williamson (missed twice) took over to add 80 and effectively win the match.
Paul Mooney
Ireland reverted to the opening pair of McCallan and White. Brinkley and Butt (left Arm) began the bowling. The former soon had White lbw. 8-1-4. A Joyce came in and saw McCal1an dropped at second slip (Butt) off Brinkley and then hit "amidships" by Butt. 25 was up in 10 overs. Butt bowled six overs for 22 and was replaced by Wright (medium fast). Brinkley bowled seven overs for 13 and was replaced by Williamson. The latter got A Joyce lbw on the back foot as he reached out in his first over (the 15th). 38-2-13. D. Joyce was next and he got very little strike in a 38 run stand which was dominated by McCallan who got 24 of the runs. The latter gave Parsons a sharp chance at cover which went for four. Two balls later McCallan got a five (four overthrows) which brought up 54 in over 19.
In over 25 McCallan hit Williamson for four through the covers and tamely returned the next ball to the bowler. 76-3-39. McCallan faced 80 balls and got four of the 14 fours in the innings. Scotland hit two sixes and 23 fours in their innings. With Dunlop joining Joyce the half way score was 78. In 12 overs this pair added 39. 10 off the 33rd over, Williamson's last, brought up 100. Tennant (slow left arm) and Maiden (off spin) kept scoring tight. Eventually Dunlop lost patience (37th over) as he often does. When he does he gets out in the same way - a "hoick" to deep square leg off Maiden. 115-4-22. Dunlop's 18th run brought him to 3000 in 126 innings, the 4th to do so after Anderson, Warke and Lewis.
Barry Archer
Archer joined D. Joyce. Three fours were hit in a stand of 27 at almost a run a ball. After 40 overs the score was 133. Joyce decided to speed the rate but was stumped in over 42 swinging wildly at Tennant. He faced 72 balls for his patient and correct 37. 142-5-37. Mooney joined Archer who got another five by means of a four overthrow. 150 did not come until over 45 which yielded 11 runs from the returning Butt. Archer was out in Tennant's last over, again with a wild swing. 167-6-27. (31 balls). Brinkley came back for Tennant (one for 29 in 10 overs) and bowled Cooke in his first over - another wild swing. 172-7-3.
In the next over (Butt) two wickets fell. Rutherford, the non striker, set out for a second run without looking and was run out. Off the fifth ball Mooney (14) was lbw. Dwyer and McCoubrey played out the remaining seven balls for six runs.
The Scottish bowling and fielding were very good. Butt, Maiden and Williamson conceded more than four runs per over but the other three gave up three or less, Brinkley taking two for 22 in nine overs.
The first over of the reply was a maiden over by Cooke to Patterson. The second over, bowled by Mooney, was mayhem. Lockhart turned the first ball to Cooke at deep square leg. There was total confusion over the second run and the throw to Rutherford ran out Lockhart. Three balls later Smith got no stride in, playing forward, and was LBW, one for two. The left handed Parsons wasted no time. In his first 12 balls he got a five (four overthrows) and two boundaries. In 10 overs 41 was up. McCoubrey' second over (relieving Mooney) gave up three fours and the score was 58 in 12 overs. Then Cooke seamed one away from Patterson who was caught at the wicket. 60-3-19.
With Salmond in Dwyer bowled two balls when rain caused a 55 minute delay. On resumption the umpires subtracted two overs and set a winning target of 176. They should not have done this as the delay was not one hour or more. Dwyer finished his over. McCallan came on and Mooney replaced Dwyer in the now wet conditions. For once Salmond did not make a big score. Mooney had two slips. Salmond hit a four, first ball, and was caught at second slip by the second as he pushed out. 73-4-7.
Williamson joined Parsons and tempered aggression was the order of the day. Parsons hit McCallan for six to reach 50 in 56 balls and, three overs later, Williamson hit the returning Dwyer for a four and a six to bring up 102 after 22 overs. In Dwyer's next over, at 107, Williamson (20) gave a stumping chance. Dwyer's three overs to date cost 23 and McCoubrey replaced him. The 25 over score was 116. Cooke came on for McCallan (seven overs for 25) and Williamson hit him for three fours. Dwyer replaced Cooke after that one over and at once, at 146, missed Williamson (35) on a hard high one handed return catch. 151 was up after this over, the 31st.
Mooney returned for McCoubrey and took his third wicket. Parsons walked across his wicket and was LBW for 70 in 92 balls. He hit a six and 10 of Scotland's 23 fours. He had won the match for his team and was rightly deemed Man-of-the-Match. 153-5-70. 23 remained to be scored. Williamson made short work of this. He made 18 of the 23 including four fours. One of these brought him to 53 off 80 balls and he finished with 58 off 84 balls with a six and eight fours.
White was given only one over in the conditions. It was the second last and a maiden to Wright. Of the other five Irish bowlers only Mooney got through 10 because Scotland won in 39.1 overs. Mooney took three for 28.
