This match was ruined by rain. There was only just over an hour's play on the first day and a complete blank on the second day. MCC included the two veterans, Grace and Murdoch (both of whom appeared for London County in the previous game). Also playing were the Middlesex players HB Chinnery, EA Nepean, JT Hearne and Albert Trott, the Australian, W Storer, the Derbyshire wicket-keeper; George Cox, the Sussex slow left-hander and GJ V Weigall of Kent. The Irish team was unchanged. This was Lucius Gwynn's last match, and seven months later he was dead.

Ireland lost the toss and play began at noon. In just over an hour Grace, 37, and Murdoch, 20, scored 57 without loss. Harrington and Ross were the bowlers and the fielding was good. Rain then ended play for the day. The second day brought more rain and even when it ceased the round was so wet that play was impossible.

The third day's play began on a bowler's wicket at 11.35 a.m. Grace cut very well while Murdoch relied on the drive. The partnership had put on 71 when Ross bowled Grace with a break back. This was the third successive time that Ross had got Grace out. Grace made 44. A little later Ross bowled Murdoch for 35. Chinnery and Storer scored rapidly. Chinnery put Harrington into St John's Wood Road for six, and this sent the 100 up for two wickets. RH Lambert came on at 105 and Ross changed to the Pavilion end. Lambert soon had Chinnery caught at deep-mid-off by Gwynn for 33, scored in 25 minutes. At the same score Harrington smartly caught Storer at square-leg off Ross. Ross was now bowling very well and only Trott of the remaining batsmen gave much trouble. Trott drove Lambert for two fours but lost Weighall whom Ross bowled for a single. Nepean was next. Trott hit fiercely for 26 in 20 minutes and was then out to a superb catch by SD Lambert off RH Lambert. It was a catch in the outfield behind the bowler. CEB Champain was next in and he saw Ross dismiss Nepean with a fine throw from cover. Ross then quickly accounted for Champain, Coleman and Hearne. The innings lasted three hours for 182, Ross taking 7-82 in 26.5 overs.

Ireland's batting was poor except for Comyn who made 39 out of 106. Trott and Hearne bowled unchanged and dismissed Ireland in 1 3/4 hours. These two great bowlers were just too good for the Irish batsmen. Hearne took 4-52 in 21.1 overs and Trott, bowling one ball less, took 6-48. Comyn made some very good strokes and was the only one who showed any degree of confidence.

When MCC went in at 4.45 p.m., there was no chance of a result. Murdoch and Chinnery then scored 48 without loss in 17 minutes off six overs from Ross, Harrington and RH Lambert. Both batsmen scored 24 runs. The innings was then declared and Ireland were set to get 125 in 70 minutes. They made no attempt to do so and off 31 overs bowled by Hearne, Trott and Cox had scored only the same number of runs for the loss of four wickets.
