Ireland easily overcame Namibia to win their opening game at the Women’s T20 World Cup qualifier in Arbroath. Their first competitive outing under interim head coach Ed Joyce was completed with 33 balls and seven wickets to spare as the senior players came to the fore.

Off-spinner Eimear Richardson (2-10 off four overs) and medium pacer Sophie McMahon (1-11 off four) led the way as the Africans were confined to 83-9 in their 20 overs.

Orla Prendergast fell early but Gaby Lewis (26), Kim Garth (22 not out) and Mary Waldron ensured Ireland take the initiative in their qualifying group in which Thailand earlier overcame Netherlands.

Ireland take on the Dutch today while the Thais provide the opposition on Tuesday, both games in Dundee. One more win would ensure a place in the last four, with the winners of both semi-finals qualifying for the finals in Australia next February.
