Ireland had gone 17 matches without losing but lost this match on run rate after more rain. The last defeat Ireland suffered was against Scotland at Castle Avenue in 1977. Monteith had captained Ireland 16 times prior to this match. He too, had not suffered defeat as captain. MA Holding replaced Croft for West Indies. The morning and early afternoon were sunny and West Indies batted their 55 overs. Then showers began and in four breaks 103 minutes were lost. Finally it was agreed that West Indies should bowl 30 overs, although these, in fact, were completed as early as 6:07 PM. The Irish target was 155 and way out of reach.

When the score was 10 Monteith dropped Greenwich off Corlett, an easy catch at mid-off. It was not expensive. At 17 Bacchus called a run to Harrison at extra cover. A direct hit ran out Greenwich. 17-1-10. DA Murray then came in. Bacchus did most of the scoring being severe on Monteith who relieved Elder after Elder had bowled four overs. Monteith bowled seven overs for 41 and Bacchus went to 50 out of 78 in 64 minutes Meanwhile, Halliday was again into a splendid 11 overs stint in which he only conceded 29 runs. In his eighth over, at 93, he got DA Murray who put up a huge skier behind O'Brien at mid-on. It was a fine catch. Kallicharran came in and FR Synnott replaced Reith (torn arm muscle) in the field. Runs were coming more slowly. 100 came in the 28th over and at 129 Anderson bowled Kallicharran. King did not last long, giving O'Brien an easy mid-wicket catch off Monteith's last possible ball. This was the 41st over. With 14 overs left to go, Corlett had five to bowl and Elder seven. Elder came on for the 43rd over. It was apparent that he had had a recurrence of an old arm injury. He bowled an over, including two no-balls, and conceded 11 runs. During it, Bacchus reached 101 out of 167 off 101 deliveries. With Reith and Elder injured Johnston would have to bowl six overs. Before lunch he bowled one for five runs. The lunch score was 175-4 off 45 overs, with Bacchus 104.

In the first over after lunch Corlett bowled Marshall for 10. Parry came in. Johnston conceded five in his second over. Then Bacchus hit Corlett for 6-4-6-6 in successive balls, 23 in all off the over. Next over he hit Johnston for six and nine came from the over. Corlett conceded three in the following over. Then Bacchus hit Johnston for 4-6-6-1 in succession. Another six followed off Corlett and, next ball, a high catch to O'Brien at midwicket. 246-6-163. This small powerful man had hit 7 sixes and 12 fours in 148 minutes off 136 balls. After lunch he went from 104 to 163 in 22 balls over six-and-a-half overs. Roberts hit a quick 16, including another six off Corlett. He was bowled next ball. Parry and Garner got another 20 off 15 balls. The final count was 284-7 off the 55 overs. In 10 overs since lunch 109 were added. Corlett conceded 58 in five overs and Johnston 51 in five. 8 sixes were hit, five of them off Corlett. Bacchus hit 163 which was the highest score against Ireland since J Aitchison scored 190*for Scotand at College Park in 1959. Roberts was dropped by Short at long-on and by Murphy at the wicket off successive balls. The second reserve fielder was Noel Grier of Clontarf.

At 2:43 PM Short and Reith began to Roberts and Holding. The latter were two of the fastest bowlers in the world. Here they were at half pace and keeping the ball well up. Roberts bowled four overs for six and Holding six overs for seven. The score reached 31 after 12.4 overs went rain caused a 14 minutes break. Three more overs were bowled and the total went to 38. Then 71 minutes were lost and tea was taken. Kallicharran replaced King and he bowled Reith in his second over. 48-1-20. As O'Brien came out rain caused another 13 minutes delay. Then Kallicharran and Bacchus bowled the last seven overs with some comedy thrown in. At the end the score was 82-1, Short 31, O'Brien 21. Rain had ruined both matches. The only memory that will live on was the hitting of Bacchus and the bowling of Halliday. It was they who won the Man-of-the-Match watches Awards.
